A classic rematch between 2021/2022 Champions League Round of 16 contenders of Inter Milan and Liverpool takes place at the San Siro this Tuesday afternoon.
We are down to the 6th game out of 8 UEFA Champions League league phase matches as last year's Serie A runner-ups of Inter Milan take on last year's English Premier League champions of Liverpool. Inter resides at 4th place on the standings having lost their most recent international matchup to Atletico Madrid, but have entered a 3-game winning streak in Italy since then. Liverpool are in the rough this year, having lost their most recent Champions League fixture 4-1 to PSV to drop to 13th place, and have since gone 1-2-0 in the Premier League to fall to 10th place.
Liverpool
Liverpool may find it difficult tomorrow afternoon considering the adversity they've run into in recent games. Their current trend (outside of a loss to Manchester City) seems to be that they are winning games you wouldn't expect them to (1-0 over Arsenal, 3-2 over Atletico, 1-0 over Real Madrid), but losing and drawing games you would expect them to win. December's only 2 Premier League games for the Reds have ended in draws with the first ending 1-1 to Sunderland on December 3, as Liverpool's only goal came from an own goal, while tying 3-3 to Leeds most recently. The Reds led the game 2-0 with a brace from Hugo Ekitike in the 50', only to allow two back-to-back goals (1 penalty) within 2 minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai seemingly put the game to bed at 3-2 with an 80' finish, although Leeds tucked home a jaw-dropping 90+6' equalizer to force Liverpool to drop points once again.
Liverpool's Alexander Isak scored his first goal of the Premier League season in a Red shirt at the end of November, and has yet to claim a Champions League goal for Liverpool, but is one of the team's highest expected goal scorer on the day at +185 odds. Hugo Ekitike will certainly need to keep up his form to help his team, as he enters the match with 2 goals in his last game and is set to score tomorrow afternoon at +185 odds as well.
Inter Milan
Inter Milan continue to fight for 1st place in Serie A but were recently overtaken by Napoli and AC Milan this weekend as they sit in 3rd place in the standings. Since their first lost in the Champions League last fixture to Atletico in a 2-1 result, Inter has won all three of their recent games, 2 in Serie A and 1 in the Coppa Italia Round of 16. Over the last 3 matches they've scored 11 goals, with their must recent game against Como 1907 ending in a 4-0 blowout with goals from Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Carlos Augosto, despite being outshot 14 shots to 12 and out-possessed 54% to 46%.
Lautaro Martinez has 4 goals in the Champions League campaign so far with a goal in his most recent Serie A match against Como as well, and enters the night as +170 odds to score anytime. Marcus Thuram, Ange-Yoan Bonny, and Francesco Esposito follow up the Argentine striker in +185 and +200 odds to score respectively.
Inter Milan are considerable favorites for the match at +110 odds at home San Siro. Liverpool aren't down for the count though, and come in at +240 odds, with a draw possible at +265. Get ready for goals as well, with the over 2.5 more probable than the under at -150 odds. Inter have 11 goals in their last 3 games, while Liverpool have just 4 to show for in their last 3. Can the Reds rally for a massive international away game? Or will the Italian side assert their dominance once again?
