The 38 year old 8 time Ballon D'or winning Argentine isn't done with his soccer career just yet.
The Inter Miami captain has performed impeccably this MLS season, leading the charts on all accounts with 29 goals and 17 assists in just 28 matches heading into the post season. He has yet to take off his crown, and as of October 23, 2025, he signed a new contract extension with Inter Miami through the end of the 2028 MLS season.
When asked, "was it a tough decision to say yes (to the extension)" Messi responded, "Honestly, it wasn't. I've always said that I'll base my decision on how I feel day to day and how I feel physically and mentally to continue playing and to continue being a part of this club. Honestly, I felt really good during the year." The Argentine continued to express his comfort with living in Southeast Florida stating, "I'm happy living in Miami, as is my family."
While the world's greatest player shows no signs of slowing down yet, he's made it clear it's his decision to retire when it feels right. The 2026 World Cup is on the horizon and Messi is sure to take part in helping his team attain another trophy before retiring.
As for the MLS, Miami plays Nashville SC tonight at 8 pm EST in round 1 of the MLS Playoffs after their last meeting ending victoriously 5-2 on October 18th, where the Barcelona legend netted a typical hat trick to seal his Golden Boot award.
In the end, Messi could choose to retire before his contract is up in 2028, similar to what Jordi Alba decided after signing his own contract extension, but whatever the case, we will support the man who changed global football forever.
